A used mini PC at home behind NAT. A small VPS with a static IP accepts requests and pushes them home through a tunnel my server opens from the inside. Built to learn how this really works, and to host my own data. Ein gebrauchter Mini-PC bei mir zuhause, hinter NAT. Ein kleiner VPS mit fixer IP nimmt Anfragen an und reicht sie durch einen Tunnel nach Hause weiter, den mein Server von innen aufbaut. Gebaut, um zu lernen, wie das wirklich funktioniert, und um meine Daten selbst zu hosten.

At home there's a used HP EliteDesk behind plain NAT. My services are still reachable from the internet. The trick is the direction. Bei mir zuhause steht ein gebrauchter HP EliteDesk hinter ganz normalem NAT. Trotzdem sind meine Services aus dem Internet erreichbar. Der Trick ist die Richtung.

The connection is opened from the inside out and held open, same as loading a web page. Every router allows that, and whatever arrives at the VPS gets pushed home through the existing tunnel. Nothing needs to be opened at home. Die Verbindung entsteht von innen nach aussen und bleibt offen, wie beim Laden einer Webseite. Das erlaubt jeder Router, und was beim VPS ankommt, wird durch den bestehenden Tunnel nach Hause durchgereicht. Am Router muss nichts geöffnet werden.

The VPS is a dumb pipe: it never sees content, and it's replaceable at any time.Der VPS ist ein dummes Rohr: Er sieht nie Inhalte und ist jederzeit ersetzbar.

The gaming PC runs Ubuntu now. I wanted to try something new, without telemetry. The installation was surprisingly easy, and it just works. Der Gaming-PC läuft jetzt auf Ubuntu. Ich wollte etwas Neues ausprobieren, ohne Telemetrie. Die Installation war überraschend einfach, und es läuft einfach.

A little about me. Kurz zu mir.
Ever since I swapped the graphics card in our family computer at twelve, computers have fascinated me. That curiosity turned into an apprenticeship, and then into a job I genuinely enjoy. Seit ich mit zwölf die Grafikkarte im Familien-PC getauscht habe, faszinieren mich Computer. Aus der Neugier wurde eine Lehre und dann ein Beruf, den ich wirklich gern mache.
Today I work as a software engineer and study alongside my job. On the side I build websites for people from the region and tinker with my homeserver. This site documents both. Heute arbeite ich als Software Engineer und studiere berufsbegleitend. Nebenbei baue ich Websites für Leute aus der Region und schraube an meinem Homeserver. Diese Seite dokumentiert beides.
